My journey officially began in May 2022.
The Uxbridge Legion Pipe band was recruiting new members, and offering free drumming classes. This seemed to be my opportunity to check out what snare drumming was all about. Classes began under the guidance of a fellow named Jack Poolton. He seemed to be well known in drumming circles as he had been playing and teaching for about 50 years. I learned how to grip the sticks and a few basic rudiments, as well as learning to read basic drum scores. I had fun, and seemed to pick up on things fairly quickly.
After about a year of learning, I figured it was time to either get serious or quit. Up to this point I had only been putting in half an effort. It seemed to me that I had some talent here and could do well if I really tried. Since I was still enjoying playing snare, I put a lot of thought into this. So I decided to get serious and develop this talent, and get some one-on-one instruction.
Cobourg Highland Games 2023 – My competitive nature dictated that if I was going to learn to play the snare, I wanted to compete. So off to Cobourg I went, to watch some drum competitions for the first time.
While at Coboug, I was impressed with a drummer who was practicing for his performance. We chatted briefly and I found out he was a Grade 1 drummer, who by the way, won both his competitions. I have been in touch with this outstanding musician, Brian Turner, ever since. Drew Duthert and Dan Bist were judging that day. There was an Uxbridge band mate there competing with a different band. She recommended speaking with Dan about some lessons. So, after the solo competitions were over, I went over and talked to him for a bit and got his email.
So began my love affair with snare drumming!
